At the 2017 SHOT Show Big 3 East presented its prestigious “Most Innovative Manufacturer Award” decided by the media at the Fall 2016 Big 3 East media event that was not presented due to the hurricane that obnoxiously blew through the area and disrupted the show. The honored recipient was Wolf Ammo based on the introduction of two very exciting and thoroughly useful uppers in 5.56 and 6.5 Grendel.
Wolf is known for inexpensive but effective ammo that millions of Americans use for training and range work but now are expanding their line to include exceptionally useful upper (and lower) receivers. Attendees at SHOT Show 2017 were able to see the new Wolf 5.56mm piston upper.
OK, so what you say that it is just another upper with a short-stoke piston, but what is new and very important that the Wolf 5.56mm upper is NOT a bunch of assembled parts that will be beta tested by its users, but the complete upper HAS BEEN USED BY THE REPUBLIC OF CHINESE ARMY ON TAIWAN. Yes, the upper is half of the rifle used for many years by the 300K members of the ROC armed forces, so its reliability, accuracy and durability has been well proven. Also the price point of $599 for a complete upper (minus a rear sight) makes expanding your collection to include a top-of-the-line piston upper is VERY cost effective.
The Specs for the Wolf 5.56mm upper include
- Short stroke gas piston system
- Hammer forged barrel for 5.56 NATO
- One piece Bolt Carrier Group (BCG)
- 1 in 7 inch twist rate 14.5 inch barrel
- Flash Suppressor
- Proprietary RAPID CLEAN one-piece piston system
- Authentic T91 hand guards and Charging handle
Another GREAT addition that I personally have shot and soon will be doing a full range accuracy evaluation on is the Wolf 6.5 Grendel upper for the INCREDIBLE price of $399.00. The 6.5 Grendel has legendary accuracy that has about 80% of the potential of the .308 out to almost 1,000 yards. The bullet has about twice the weight of a 5.56 round making the 6.5 Grendel (developed by my friend Bill Alexander) both tactically efficient and an excellent hunting round that Florida hog hunters have been using for years to put down boars with one shot. I will be doing a hog hunting article for the 2018 Glock Annual using their new 10mm G40, but I also will be carrying a wolf 6.5 Grendel as both a back-up and to make some additional bacon.
The Specs for the Wolf’s 6.5 Grendel upper include
- Carbine Gas System
- 7075T6 Forged Upper Receiver
- 16 inch barrel
- 1 in 8 inch twist M4 style barrel
- .308 A2 Flash Suppressor
- 5/8-24 Threads
- A2 polymer carbine-length hand guards
- GI charging handle
- Picatinny rail for front sight (not included)
- Picatinny rail upper receiver
- Standard bolt carrier group
- Bolt with .136 Bolt face depth
